To give an improved sky appearance rather than the black space and stars background which shows when an avatar is above 10m in altitude and provide some surrounding distance terrain, a large “skydome” sphere can be placed around a scene and a terrain object used to simulate the ground just below the 0m hard base level.
@Judas provided a sample skydome via the URL http://www.danana.webspace.virginmedia.com/land/land2.fbx an this was mounted on the hifi://hifi.aiai.ed.ac.uk domain. A copy is available for backup at http://vue.ed.ac.uk/hifi/fbx/skydome/skydome.fbx
After placing the mesh in world, it was edited by selecting it and using the ` key and placed at 100,-6.45,100, with no rotations and a scale of 3000. The negative Y value just placed the simulated terrain below the 0m level such that avatar shadows fall on it naturally. Currently in HiFi to select such a large object you have to be well outside the area, at for example hifi://hifi.aiai.ed.ac.uk/2500,15,4500/ (HiFi @ location named “outside”)
