Early-career researchers promotions workshop

A workshop for early-career researchers interested in promotion to Grades 7 and 8, will be held 2-4pm Tuesday 27 June in IF 4.31/4.33.

This event is open to all potential applicants who wish to learn more about the promotions process, and line managers involved in supporting colleagues with promotions.

Webinar: Progressing female talent in academic institutions

What is holding women back in academic institutions? The WISE campaign will explore the issues in a free webinar, ‘Progressing female talent in academic institutions,’ 2.30-4pm Wednesday 14 June 2017.

Speakers

  • Hilary Lapin-Scott, Vice Chancellor of Swansea University and winner of the WISE Hero Award 2016, will talk about ‘Changing the culture to support women to achieve’
  • Professor Susan Wray from University of Liverpool will discuss induction ‘from Cradle to Chair’ and female specific programmes.

Webinar training: Confronting sexual harassment

Webinar training entitled ‘No one Asks for It: Confronting Sexual Harassment’ is available 1-2pm, Thursday 20 April or Thursday 27 April 2017 to any member of staff, but particularly those who would have direct contact with students. Objectives:

• describe what sexual harassment looks like and why it’s important for staff at the University to understand this

• give ideas about how to challenge sexual harassment, whether you’re subject to it or witness it

• give information to those who have close relationships or contact with students about what they should do in the event of witnessing sexual harassment or assault, or in the event of a disclosure.

The following training opportunity is aimed at women up to senior lecturer level or professional services equivalent, who are interested in exploring leadership and management as an option for progression.

Festival of Creative Learning

As well as interesting events about matters digital*, next week’s Festival of Creative Learning, 20-24 February, includes a Reflection on Equality and Diversity in the Workplace led by Ben Lyon, Chair of OUTbound, Transport for London’s LGBT+ Staff Network Group.

(*Events about matters digital include Edinburgh IoT Challenge, Learn to Code, UNA – Network Based Explorations, Design the Future of Digital Education, Data and Democracy and an Environment Now Thinkspiration workshop among others).

Girl Geek Scotland: ‘sticky floors’ workshop

Girl Geek Scotland is a network and community for people working and studying in technology and related areas in Scotland. On the evening of Tuesday 7 February 2017, they are holding a ‘sticky floors’ workshop at Waverley Gate, Edinburgh, with speakers who work as personal coaches. The aim is to help people to think differently, to help them overcome the subconscious blocks that may be hold them back in their career (the sticky floor as opposed to the glass ceiling.)
