Modelling the impact of speed limit changes on public transport

20mphSmaller

The QUANTICOL project has been modelling the impact of the new traffic regulation to limit city centre vehicular speeds to 20 miles per hour (a reduction from the current 30 miles per hour limit). This change to the speed limit has been contentious and a range of arguments have been presented both in favour of the change and against it.

Working together with Transport for Edinburgh, and making use of the open-access data published by the company, the QUANTICOL project has been able to provide a sound formal analysis of the impact of the change from the perspective of a public transport provider.

The model-based predictions say that the impact on public transport will be very limited, with many services seeing no significant impact at all.  Welcome news for Edinburgh’s public transport users!
