DICE upgrade to Scientific Linux 6 (SL6)

This is an early warning that we shall be upgrading DICE desktops to Scientific Linux 6 (SL6) this summer/autumn.

SL6, which is based on Redhat’s Enterprise Linux 6, is very similar to Fedora 13 on which our current DICE desktop platform is based. However, support for Fedora 13 is about to be withdrawn – Fedora platforms have a short lifespan – which would leave us without security/bug patches.

SL6, which was only released this year, will be supported (upstream) for at least four years. We expect that the DICE desktop platform will be based on SL6 until at least 2013.

Most of the teaching lab desktops will be upgraded to SL6 in June/July, with the remaining labs staying with F13 until September to allow this year’s MSc cohort to complete their projects.

The upgrade of staff and research postgrad DICE desktops will commence in June and we plan to complete these upgrades by Xmas.

This distrowatch page lists the versions of key packages present in SL6.

Further details will be announced in May.
