Core Textbook Readings for Each Week

In order to make it easier for you to prepare the course and look up issues that were not clear after class, I have decided to base the course around a single, easily accessible textbook, that is relatively inexpensive in ebook format:

Frank Ritter / Gordon Baxter / Elizabeth Churchill (2014): Foundations for Designing User-Centred Systems. London, UK: Springer.

In addition to the relevant chapters from the book, each week will feature 1-2 core papers.

  • Week 1: Introduction to Human Factors: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapters 1 & 2
  • Week 2: Perception and Behaviour: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapter 4
  • Week 3: Memory and Cognition: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapters 5, 6.1-6.3
  • Week 4: Aspects of Context: Anthropometric, Technological, Socioeconomic: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapters 3 & 8
  • Week 5: Accessibility: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapter 3
  • Week 6: Usability Assessment Techniques: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapter 13
  • Week 7: Computer-Supported Cooperative Work: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapter 8
  • Week 8: Errors: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapter 10
  • Week 9: Interacting with Information: Ritter/Baxter/Churchill, Chapter 9
